Incentives & Cost

The size and cost of a solar PV system for a residential, commercial, government building or public works project depends on the unique energy needs of each site.

The size is determined by an assessment of a building’s total energy usage over one year and not by square footage. A Brilliant energy consultant visits a facility’s site, analyzes a year’s worth of electric utility bills, and submits a free energy use assessment to the client.

Brilliant then provides a solar system proposal with a design based on actual and projected energy needs. We design our systems to maximize the potential of each solar project in order to decrease or eliminate electricity costs and in some cases provide additional income.

Our solar systems are a definite “GREEN” product and therefore are less environmentally detrimental to the planet.

Solar Power Systems are eligible for incentives based on the rated DC capacity of the system installed. Under the 2009 program, residential systems up to 10 kW and non-residential systems up to 50 kW are eligible for incentives.

Tax Exemption
New Jersey offers a full exemption from the state's sales tax for all solar energy equipment.

NJ Renewable Rebate
Below are the initial rebate levels for new 2009 applications:

  • Standard Residential (10 kW max):
  • Residential w/energy audit (10 kW max):
  • Non-residential (50 kW max):
  • $1.55 per watt
  • $1.75 per watt
  • $1.00 per watt

Federal Tax Incentives
Tax credits are available at 30% of the cost, with no upper limit through 2016 for existing homes & new construction.

Net Metering
Customers eligible for net metering retain ownership of all renewable-energy credits (RECs) associated with the electricity they generate.


Solar Renewable Energy Certificates (SRECs)

1 SREC = 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) or 1000 kWh of production.

New Jersey’s SREC program provides a means for solar credits to be created and sold to electric suppliers in order to meet their solar requirements. The price of SRECs is determined primarily by their market availability.
